Key Information:

Our client is one of the leading pediatric integrated health care systems in the United States. This non-profit organization operates a uniquely integrated model which includes a health care system, inpatient and outpatient medical centers (multiple premier care hospitals), a physician network of primary care providers and specialists, a home health care network, a health plan and a health foundation. They currently have approximately 300 licensed beds, and are growing to over 400 beds. The system operates over 35 pediatric care offices and specialty clinics. With over 4,000 employees, the organization encounters over 1 million patients each year. This is a profitable operation, with a tremendous reputation for high quality of care. Because of their excellence in care, the pediatric hospitals receive referrals from hospitals in the surrounding counties. They are ranked in the top 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals for nursing excellence and have a distinguished reputation for uncommon care in their Neurology and Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neonatology, Hematology / Oncology and Pulmonology programs.

Our client currently has a key leadership position open as the Senior Vice President, Information Systems / Chief Information Officer (CIO). The CIO will be responsible for the coordination and integration of information systems and technology resources across all companies within the health care system. The CIO will possess strong leadership, management and communication skills to effectively work with all levels of the organization regardless of their technical expertise. The CIO must have broad experience with information systems to serve as a bridge connecting clinicians with the strategic initiatives of information technology. The CIO will serve as a catalyst for organizational change during the development and implementation of technologies, and will ensure that the IT strategic plan an IT resource utilization remain aligned with the strategic initiatives of the integrated system.

This individual will lead a direct report team of 5 FTEs (Chief Technology Officer, Chief Medical Information Officer, Enterprise Architect, Director of IT Business Analysis and Planning, and a Manager of Service Delivery) with a total department of approximately 135 FTEs and contractors. The CIO has direct supervision over Information Services, Telecommunications and Physician Answering Services.

Key responsibilities and deliverables for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Facilitate the formation, implementation and periodic update of an IT strategic plan to remain aligned with the health care system’s strategic plan.
• Promote collaboration and transparency across all companies over decisions on the alignment of IT resources and IT strategic direction, including the prioritization of proposed IT projects, to continually broaden the organization’s understanding of technology decisions.
• Plan and manage the IT investment portfolio to deliver on current and future needs while maintaining alignment with the system’s positioning within the healthcare industry and operating region.
• Provide leadership and foster an environment of open dialogue and transparency.
• Build collaborative alliances between IT and all of the companies and departments, and oversee the use of these business partnerships to assist in planning, consultation and advisory services on technology selection and development.
• Assist in the analysis and redesign of work flow to ensure the gain of maximum value to the business from technology.
• Recommend and approve the purchase, rental, lease or license from outside sources of computer systems, communication systems and office systems, hardware and software.
• Recommend changes in the IT organizational structure or process, based upon ongoing advancements in technology, identified process inefficiencies or new requirements.
• Recommend and approve changes in communication or office system equipment to minimize expenses while assuring reliable and timely services.
• Coordinate and negotiate with consultants, attorneys and other vendors in the acquisition of and the management of all major IT services.
• Provide world-class customer service for IT services throughout the system.
• Participate as a member of the senior executive leadership team in strategic planning meetings and retreats.
• Participate in administrative meetings, planning retreats, special task forces and project teams.
• Insure full utilization of current information management and resources.
• Chair and/or participate in the IT Steering Committee
• Oversee the IT Project Management Office (PMO) which manages a portfolio of technology projects using defined project management methodologies, communicates project progress effectively with project champions, and identifies and manages resources and other project constraints.
• Provide an executive dashboard on the portfolio of projects as well as the entire scope of the IT function.
• Provide framework which will enable the managerial knowledge and practices of current IT leadership staff.
• Participate in continuing education to keep the IT systems current with available and affordable technology.
• Specific continuing education meetings include IT forums, Hospital Information Management Systems Society meetings, core vendor CIO forums, physician/clinical informatics meeting and other continuing education programs as needed.
• Direct the continual upgrading of supervised staff.
• Motivate the IT department personnel to progress in their positions, develop their skills and future potential and maintain a high level of current knowledge through individual advice and guidance.
• Plan for training programs to update equipment and procedures to maintain pace with technological progress, economic changes and business needs.
• Collaborate with the corporate compliance, health information management and legal departments to ensure the appropriate monitoring of the security of data to assure the integrity and reliability of computerized information systems, data, communication system, office systems and electronic medical records.
• Formulate and implement policies for government-mandated information management, including HIPPA compliance regarding patient information privacy and security, to formulate and implement policies for data protection storage and retrieval.
• Plan, implement and test IT disaster recovery.
• Facilitate the development and testing of business continuity plans which ensure the continued operations and clinical and business processes during technical outages and downtimes.
• Prepare, review and approve the ongoing management of annual operating budgets for IT, telecommunications and the physician answering services departments.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Candidates will have 5+ years of executive technology leadership experience in a large company.
• Demonstrated success in developing and implementing key IT strategic plans will be required for this role.
• Strong experience in the healthcare space is required, with direct leadership experience in an integrated delivery system being highly preferred.

EDUCATION / CREDENTIALS:
• A Bachelor Degree in hospital administration, business administration, computer science, mathematics, or similar field of study, is required.
• An advanced degree, such as a Master’s of Business Administration, is not required, but would be a very strong plus.
